Over the years, Door of Hope has funded the following projects in an effort to relieve the suffering of children and teenagers.

Enakievo
In the poor and perilous coal mining district of Enakievo in the eastern Ukraine, Door of Hope has provided money for the restoration of a dilapidated building. The building is now being used as a feeding centre for local street children who receive a hot meal each day.

The area is extremely impoverished. There is a high suicide rate and many families are irreparably damaged due to a high Vodka consumption. As in other areas of the Ukraine, unemployment, poverty, alcoholism and broken families push children onto the streets in order to beg for money. Additional to this is a dangerously high level of industrial, metallic pollution detrimental to human health of all ages.

Lviv.
Door of Hope continues to help fund projects in the ancient city of Lviv and its surrounding districts. Operated by the Rev Misha Kenio, vital areas of need among children and youth receive close attention and highest commendation from local government authorities.

  • Within a converted, post Communist warehouse that is under constant development, Rev Misha operates a church, a café, and a centre for homeless children. As well as receiving meals and clothing, the children are taught basic life skills that include cooking, sewing, hygiene and Christian principles.
  • Youth clubs are also conducted in various parts of the city.
  • Professionally conducted Youth camps are operated every summer in the Carpathian mountains. The children and youth consist of those who have been living on the streets or occupants of an orphanage.
  • Door of Hope has also been funding items distributed in two Prisons for Young Offenders. Through the direction of Rev Misha, beds, mattresses, extra food, art materials, books, items of hygiene, musical instruments, as well as the painting and restoration of prison dormitories, have been provided. The ages of the children range from 12 to 17. Their stay in prison are for offences ranging from shoplifting to murder.

Kiev.
Door of Hope provides financial backing for Ludmila Myslitskaya who operates a Centre for young victims of cerebral palsy. Caring for over 200 families (many being single parents) in the city, she arranges regular parties and opportunities for mutual support and encouragement. This is of vital importance in a culture where government welfare/practical support for the mentally handicapped is nil, and finance very small.

Cherkassy.
Door of Hope has given financial help to the Child’s Rescue Charity. In the Ukrainian town of Cherkassy, street children are housed, given meals and instruction in hygiene. Whenever possible, a child’s family is contacted and given support. Children living in derelict buildings are also made a focus of attention. Larissa Kovalenko and Larissa Lysenko are directors of Child’s Rescue Charity.

Merefar.
Door of Hope's latest project of support are children and poor families living beside the rubbish dumps of Merefar. In order to survive, people collect whatever is available from the garbage tips. Each item is placed in different piles, metal, clothes, shoe leather, etc, in order to see what is saleable. Merefar is an extremely poor ghetto area of the Ukraine. No sanitation, little running water, in fact a single tap for supplying most of the occupants of the village.
